A major milestone in advanced cancer care was achieved this month as Stanford Medicine successfully treated its first pediatric patient using its newly launched proton therapy facility.

The patient, a seven-year-old child diagnosed with a rare brain tumour, became the first person to receive treatment at Stanford Medicine’s new ultracompact proton therapy centre.

Most notably, the treatment was completed without anaesthesia — a development that has the potential to significantly improve the treatment experience for young cancer patients and their families.
